About
History
UHI was founded in March 2007 after the current executive director visited Ghana and learned more about the chronic funding problems faced by community-based organizations in the developing world.
After weeks of meeting with organizations in the Buduburum Refugee Camp and interviewing members of the refugee community, UHI chose the Self-Help Initiative for Sustainable Development (SHIFSD) as its partner in implementing education and economic empowerment projects.
In the summer of 2008, after the closure of the Buduburum Refugee Camp, UHI moved operations to Liberia. We are currently in the beginning stages of implementing various projects in Monrovia, Liberia.
In 2009, with additions to our Board of Directors, UHI is continuing its work in Liberia, but is also expanding to work with community organizations in its hometown of Philadelphia, PA as well as other locations outside the United States.
